Censuses in Staten Island and City Directories

We have census data online!

Everybody knows that the Federal Census was taken every ten years. But do you have any idea how valuable the state censuses are? For example, the 1855 State Census (unlike New Jersey) contains way more information than the 1850 or 1860 Federal Census [i.e. NY county of birth and # of years resident of town or city]. I strongly recommend you investigate these resources. Yes, they will take time, as they're not indexed, but it's time well spent. For most years, Staten Island is only one roll.

Censuses from The Family History Show: Federal Censuses from 1790; Colonial Census: 1663-1772; Loyalists: 1782; State Censuses: 1814, 1835, 1845, 1855, 1865, 1875, 1892, 1905, 1915, 1925; Union Veterans & Widows: 1890.

Census Indexes are now appearing at online subscription services! If you are an ancestry member, you can search their online census indexes. Their advantage: You can soundex search.

Note: CensusTools distributes free census worksheets. Very handy! And includes New York State Census 1825-1925 and others.

Index Notes:

There are few indexes for State Censuses of Richmond County. Use a city directory to look up an address, then a finding aid for ED [I hear they do exist], and search the ED in the census.
