Thank you to NYGenWeb for hosting our site

My name is Janet, and I am your site coordinator. I am just the conduit through which all the good people share their information! Please read a bit about our site, and join in the fracas!

Our History

In May 1997, Bob O'Connor posted a message to the GEN-NYS list asking for other Staten Island researchers to get together. That note goes as follows:

I am trying to locate others with an active interest in Staten Island genealogy. There seem to be very few. My hope is to compile a list of interested persons who are willing to share data and ultimately make the connection to the genealogical society at the Staten Island Institute of Arts and Sciences. I am hopeful that through this society and the archivist at the SIIAS we can open up information resources that are currently very difficult to access.

So, if you are actively interested in Staten Island genealogy and willing to share your resources with others having similar interests please contact me and lets see what we can do as a group.

Janet remembers how thrilled she was when a friend hooked her up with him (thanks, Betty!). She thought she was the only one. :-) A year later, in May 1998, that mailing list evolved into a WEB page of surnames and contact information. That page (ok, now 2) is still an integral part of our site. We looked to gather information to help the new SI researcher learn the tricks of the Richmond County genealogy trade. Then our focus shifted to sharing resources and putting data online. To that end, we've had many contributions and found many contributors.

In 1998, two independent researchers interested in Staten Island genealogy recognized a need and had the opportunity to advance their interests. Janet and Bob decided to join forces and develop an automated genealogy research capability. To this project they brought a rapidly growing no-post mailing list that had been started a year or so earlier and the technical expertise necessary for web page design and development. Their efforts quickly evolved into a formal Staten Island Genealogy web page which has grown rapidly and gained widespread acceptance.

Tom has provided technical expertise as needed, always stepping up when asked.

In 2016, our host RootsWeb, now owned by, went down. The free pages like ours were low priority, so the downtime was extended. We moved to NYGenWeb's site, which offered to host us - thank you! - and have decided to stay.

As we mark 20 years together, feel free to offer celebration suggestions!

The success of has, without a doubt, been a group effort. There have been many valuable contributions made by interested followers and many more are anticipated for the near future. Those who have contributed to the success of this page include:

This list is as of 1999 and has of course grown since.

Six months after the site started, in December 1998, we became the official NYGenWeb site for Richmond County, in the USGenWeb.

The WEB site, the GenConnect boards, and the mailing list are a truly cooperative effort among many individuals. We look forward to everybody sharing connections and information! Someday I'll manage to connect my line to half of you anyway!
